Happy New Year and we hope you enjoyed your Christmas.  We certainly did.  Our volunteer patrols have been busily working weekends and public holidays during the festive season.  We even had patrols on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.  Thank you to those patrols members who gave up a bit of their Christmas for the safety of our beach goers.  Our Patrol Captains for Christmas Day were Functions Director Jeremy and Director of Lifesaving Michelle.  The Club has been very active – as usual this time of year.  Nippers have been having a great time thanks to the dedicated Juniors Director Gayl and the team of fantastic age managers.  They also had a fantastic Christmas Party with Santa turning up by IRB.

In competition, WBHSLSC has again excelled. At Tea Gardens on the weekend of 10/11 December in the North Coast Surf Boat Series. We took 3 teams, The Bullsharks, The Rogue Sharks and the Boatettes (our new U19 women’s team) who all recorded wins in their respective heats, with the Bullsharks winning the weekend.  We also had team manager Glenn Stewart and 2 competitors, Mia Bales who came 3rd in the flags and Hugh Stewart who came 4th on the ski representing our Club at Interbranch Championships the same weekend at Stockton. Our Club will host the North Coast Boat Series on Saturday 20th January on Rainbow Beach. We will be also hosting the Mid North Coast Branch SLS Championships on Rainbow Beach with the beach events on Saturday 20th January and water events on Sunday 21st January. Many Club members are working hard at training for the 2018 Envirobank NSW Country Surf Life Saving Championships on 4th & 5th February at South West Rocks, NSW Surf Life Saving State Championships commencing 25th February at Blacksmiths Beach.

Our Wauchope-Bonny Hills SLSC’s representative for the ‘Junior Lifesaver of the Year’ is the very talented Jasper Schultz. She was involved in club interviews then have to go up against the Mid North Coast SLS Judging Panel where she underwent a further 30 minutes interview. The Branch nominee will be announced on 21st January. Good luck Jasper. Our sponsors have a major impact on our Club and provide the financial assistance to allow us delivering high quality services.  Thank you to our sponsors; First National Real Estate, North Haven for being our Life Saving sponsor; Port Orthodontics our Nippers sponsor; UltraFloor Australia and UltraFloor MNC are our surf boat sponsors; Fat Fish Bistro is our gym and competition board sponsor. Also thank you to Wauchope and Bonny Hills residents who generously support us. Thank you to Earl’s Turf, Taree who made a substantial donation to the Club.  Thank you, Matt & Chrissie from Currie Pest Control, Bonny Hills for spraying our Club. Cockroaches and spiders are gone – great work.

Carols at the Beach were held on Sunday 10th December in front of the Club.  It was a fantastic night that was well attended.  Thank you to Jock Garven and Melinda Robinson our MCs for the evening. The portable stage was supplied by Lake Cathie Lions Club – thank you to the Lions, Phil and the guys who erected and pulled it down.  Also, Head AV who supplied the lighting and audio. The music came from the fantastic bands and choirs from St. Josephs Primary School, Laurieton, North Haven Public School and the Camden Haven Concert Band.   Also, our sponsors, who without their assistance the Carols could not be staged.  They include Port Macquarie Hastings Council, Warren Plowright Toyota, Bonny Hills Garden Centre, Port Macquarie Golf Club and Laurieton United Services Club. Also, thank you to Bonny Hills Rural Fire Services, who safely delivered Santa to us and to our amazing volunteers from the Club who did the BBQ, canteen, first aid tent, face painting, assisting set up and pull down of the stage.

Our Beaches Bar – the one with the great view and friendly atmosphere, is open as normal on Friday evenings from 5pm – 9pm.  During January we will also be open on Sunday afternoons between 3pm and 7pm with live music. 7th January – Billy Hart in Brave Hart. 14th January – Cassie Bennett comes home for a special gig. 21st January – Gypsy Royal. 29th January – James Bennett.  Trivia night is on Saturday 20th January – tickets from the bar or Fat Fish. All welcome. Come down and see us, make up a group of friends and join us at Beaches – enjoy the friendly family atmosphere and fantastic views over Rainbow Beach with a cold beverage. Make us your club in our community.  We now have discounts available for members of Beaches.  It’s just $20 per year and you can collect points when you purchase drinks and meals.

With 3 water based fatalities in our community in December we urge everyone to consider their own safety when swimming at the beach or boating.  Thank you to our members and members of our community who assisted in the searches. Remember – swim between the flags in the patrolled areas at the beach. If you are boating – wear a lifejacket.   If you are a parent or supervising children in water anywhere, make sure your attention is not diverted. Seconds can cost lives.
